Wise Men Still Seek Him!

This is that time of the year again when local stores, high street stores, street markets (where many home made toys are sold) are jam packed with shoppers who are celebrating Christmas.

The other thing that marks this time is the level of alcohol abuse which we shall soon see on our streets across the Land. All because men are “celebrating Christmas”. Each time I see this or read of this celebration saga, I am reminded of the way we celebrated ours in the country of my birth.

Growing up in Lagos Nigeria, our parents (bless them) during Christmas bought us what was called “Christmas” dress, cooked variety of food (rice and chicken stew, pounded yam and egusi stew, depending in your tribe by the way) and on the Day itself, every Christian family went to church! As a child, you had no choice. We were not given the choice of whether we would go or not, or in many homes which toys you wanted or write down your lists of gifts! I am not against any of this by the way as long as you can afford it and still pay your bills afterwards.

Please note that I am emphasising a point and the point is that all across the world, Christmas is celebrated differently.

In our country of adaptation for those of us who have migrated around the world by now you would have noticed it is different from your country of birth.

Now, it is a season of celebration and franchising. No emphasis is on Christ of Christmas and without Christ, no Christmas

Prophet Isaiah said “Unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given and the government will be upon His shoulder and His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace, there shall be no end. Upon the throne of David and over His Kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgement and justice. From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this” Isaiah 9:6-7.

At Christmas, politicians argue to get us on their side and make speeches that raise the hopes of many; even us preachers do our best on that but when all is said and done, what next?

Why spend so much money every Christmas, drive your car to the shopping centre only to come out and see a ticketing officer writing you a ticket or worse still have it clamped because you came out of the car in a hurry to get the gift you have always wanted without noticing the no parking sign!

Why spend so much on children you were never there to raise January to December but to pacify them and sooth your conscience you spent your December mortgage or rent on their gifts and afterwards what happens next?

Why spend so much to drink alcohol in the name of celebration, only to see yourself when you are sober, in the gutter, sleeping by the side of the road being picked up by the police on Embankment or Deptford or wherever you live!

Our culture is going backwards to the days of ignorance despite so much education, enlightenment and great knowledge possessed but our attitude to life is lack the taking of responsibility for our END by asking HOW AND WHY we do what we do NOW before it is too late!

We have become victims of the media game (I am not against media – everyone has their place in society) but I am, through this message, advocating PERSONAL RESPONSIBILTY FOR YOUR LIFE.

In the midst of economic challenges many are still buying what they cannot afford and still “buy now pay later”.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the season of good news. The good news is that, long time ago, Jesus Christ, the Son of God came into the world to die for our sins! I know the controversy behind the date of His birth (not December 25) of course not December 25! But who cares about the date?

Many of us today in the world celebrate our birthday on a day we were told by our parents; we do not know either! By the way, let the date be changed tomorrow to August 25, we will still celebrate Jesus Christ.

It is not about the DAY. It is about the reason for the season.

That God sent His Son to be born by Mary in a manger and the sole purpose of His birth in the world, was to DIE to save you and I from SIN.

Some of us are from a part of the world where sacrifices are made to appease the gods. If there is any sinful act according to the dictate of the deity in the town/village/country, whatever the deity demands is given to remove its anger over the people.

Why should you be surprised that God, the Creator of the entire Universe, sent His Son to die so that His righteous anger and judgement on sin be atoned for?

The Person of Jesus is Wonderful
The Principles of Jesus are Wonderful when you take heed to them and they all guarantee you peace, joy and prosperity.
The Power of Jesus is awesomely Wonderful!
His power raised the dead, healed the sick, transforms lives.

The One we celebrate is our Counsellor, Mighty God.

Even though He being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of those in heaven, and of those on earth and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” Philippians 2:6-11.

With such truth established, only the wise will seek the Christ of Christmas and not simply be caught up in the social and franchising business.

May you truly know the Joy of Christmas.
