United is a word used to describe collective togetherness. When Jesus gave out the command of the Great Commission, He urged the disciples to go out into every nation making disciples (Matthew 28:19). Churches around the world are filled with a diverse multitude of members coming from different nations. From the wet and windy England to the tropics of the Caribbean, it truly is a joy to see many people from different nations praising and serving God.
HOTRIC is no stranger to diverse nations. We have over 15 nationalities within the church and yet this number continues to grow. Our God is truly a God of diversity. One question I find myself asking is can all nations come under one church with different cultures, backgrounds and ultimately nationalities and truly flow in accordance with God’s will?
My answer is yes, because 1 Corinthians 7:23a tells us that we have been bought at a price; therefore we are not our own anymore we belong to Christ. His will becomes our will. 1 Peter 2:9 says: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” (KJV)
As believers we are now part of the Kingdom of God, our cultures are all important but His Kingdom comes first! We are a Christ community (1 Corinthians 12: 12-24). Just as we are from many nations we are also part of the body of Christ just as the body has many organs but collectively they are one. Unity is key to a Christ community. We can only impact the world when we are collectively together. Disunity is a tool the enemy uses to distract us from carrying out the will of God.
I charge those of you reading this article to embrace the different nationalities within your church with a heart of love. Be united for we are family – we are one! We must be an international community bound by love as a family who are kingdom people.
